Bombergirl: ENTER Dark!

Bombergirl continues with yet another new character, though with a somewhat surprising twist.

...and as in 'twist', I really mean Konami doing the thing many English fans were expecting them to do to begin with: add more girls based off of Bomberman characters. Anyway, meet Dark, a character based off of Regulus- specifically his Bomberman 64: The Second Attack counterpart.

(I started writing this back in April, then admittedly forgot about it prior to earlier today)

His Bomberman 64: The Second Attack appearance

Having come from space to take on Shiron, the fill-in for Jetters' version of Bomberman, she's someone who wants to take on the strongest person in the room and be recognized by everyone. Being a literal kid here, though, her big words and declarations of being the best are immediately shrugged off by literally everyone.

Alongside her is her partner, Rabbidel, which she sees as both a pet of sorts and a weapon. It's design is actually a rather neat fusion of Minvo (the ball-shaped enemies seen throughout the game), one of the dark bats Regulus summoned during his encounter in The Second Attack, and most interestingly, Pommy. She even has her own ship which is a callback to the one Bomberman got caught in the black hole with during, again, The Second Attack. Once again, like with all the other characters, there's a lot to actually appreciate with each of their designs if you put aside any initial disgust with their depictions.

Additionally, since the actual reveal back in April, I've been told her one-note personality might be a rip on Regulus' characterization in The Second Attack, where he infamously states that he only lives to beat Bomberman and get stronger. Knowing this, her being a kid her becomes much funnier and a little tongue-in-cheek.

Falling into the Bomber category, of course, her special moves come down to big, powerful explosions, with the odd projectile here and there.

Her first skill is a special bomb which, upon igniting, summons Rabbidel and sends him flying forward, acting as both a special explosion and a projectile. This, like I got earlier, is a reference to one of the dark birds Regulus would use as projectiles in The Second Attack.

The second skill is an insanely powerful bomb that insta-kills anyone within it's path and leaves fire all around. This calls back to the special black hole bombs Regulus would summon during his encounter in The Second Attack.

The first additional skill destroys things with "the power of darkness", phasing them out of existence.

The second additional skill has her taking off the school uniform and power up with an insane aura. This powers-up your bombs and stats for a little bit.

Saying all this, I wouldn't be surprised if she's considered a more rare character to unlock.

To wrap this up, there was an interesting development with Dark in one of the series' usual comics. In said comic, Platina (Sirius) pops up and snatches up Dark's Elemental Stone before Kuro (Black) also appears and ambushes her.

Dark is impressed by and, at least in a self-proclaimed sense, accepts Kuro as her sensei (of sorts). This establishes a parallel between Kuro and Shiro, since her own 'apprentice' happens to be Shiron. Why these two ended up being matched up outside of poking fun at Regulus, though, I couldn't tell you. One of these days, I should do a deep dive into Bombergirl's tenuous lore because it does exist.

As always, thank you all so much for sticking around despite the insane inactivity on my end. Life continues to happen. As always, be sure to stay tuned to the Bomberman Channel for the latest in all things Bomberman news, reviews (there should be one relatively soon), and discussion.
